What Disturbs You?
Reverend Alan Graham
Mark 6:32-34 (NIV)
So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.
What disturbs you today? Do the things that disturb Jesus disturb you? IPOD/DIESEL JEANS/50" T.V.S etc the world has lost it's way but we must be prepared to do something about the world we live in! We are sent to be salt and light to the world and we should be active in OUR/YOUR world, remember we are Jesus to our world, we are Jesus' hands and feet, we are Jesus' mouth and words, when people see us they should see Jesus,
When Jesus was disturbed he did something about it, whether feeding the 5000 hungry or touching a leper or raising a 12 year old from the dead.
He was disturbed enough to do something!
If His church is not salt and light, if when we look at the poor, the injustice in our world, the hungry, the naked and thirsty and we are not disturbed then we are not living as Jesus commanded. He was a doer and a goer, a mover and a shaker and he was very disturbed by the world in which he lived, so should we!
He came to make a difference and change lives and we should be about the same. So what really disturbed Jesus? What moves Him today? In our reading I believe.
Jesus was moved or disturbed by the sight of sin, they were like sheep without a shepherd, that's why he came, he had a heart of compassion for sinners, Matt 9v13"I did not come to call the righteous but sinners". Amen.
The heart of Jesus is still moved and disturbed at the sight of sin, whether it's the bombing and killing of someone or a prostitute working on the street, whether it's a child working a 16 hour day for a bowl of rice or a young boy being forced into fighting a war,
Jesus is still moved at the sight of sin! So what does Jesus do? He moves His people to do something about it! He moves you and He moves me! He touches our hearts with the things that touch His! How can they hear without someone telling them, have you got beautiful feet?
Those who went before us were moved also, GLADYS AYLWARD, a wee woman with a big heart and an even bigger God, she was shown by the Lord the sight of China deep in sin and it caused her to forsake everything and move to China, she had a holy determination, Mission Societies turned her down, but she went and was called the "London Sparrow" she said to God, "here's my money, here's my Bible, here's my life take me to China" and she went! They even made a movie about her, "the INN of the 6th Happiness" Jesus was moved and HE moved Gladys!
She had never been to China but she had been to Jesus and He disturbed her!
Are you disturbed? Are you moved? By somewhere or something in this world, then there is a good chance that God is in the thing!
AMY CARMICHAEL, blue eyes... Tell the story, and she went and rescued multitudes, Jesus was disturbed at the sight of sin in India and disturbed Amy and she went!
What about you and me my friends, what are we doing? Dirt and filth on TV, pornographic magazines in our shops, sex obsession all around us. We are supposed to be salt and light to this sin sick world.
In Zimbabwe we see SIN literally killing people, 2 out of 3 in Harare with HIV/AIDS! As a result of sin! Guys living a promiscuous life and get Aids, go to witchdoctors and told to abuse small children, its sin! Sugar daddies, nangas and abuse by grandparents, uncles etc sex abuse all swept under the carpet for the sake of culture!
We have been disturbed enough to tell tens of thousands of children that this is wrong and they are not to blame and I know in some areas that police are actually moving in and prosecuting the evildoers and children are being rescued Praise God!
We go into schools and talk the word of God, we declare the Gospel which is the only answer, we see abuse through witchdoctors, children, babies thrown down sewers, what do we do? Speak up, meet leaders, get something happening, open Jabulani, voted to be the best equipped home in Zimbabwe! why?
DISTURBED WITH THE THINGS THAT DISTURB JESUS!
How many seen movie "Amazing Grace?" In movie William Wilberforce looks in mirror and sees African slave, the sin of slavery haunted him, it moved him, it disturbed him and he did something about it! Jesus wanted slavery to stop and He spoke to a man! 15 years in Parliament, year after year his bill was defeated, but it happened, slavery abolished! Jesus did not come for your best life now or a purpose driven life...
He came to save us from our sin and reconcile us to himself, HE DID SOMETHING DIED ON A X! Thats how disturbed He was! He died on a cross! Are we prepared to die to ourselves, give our lives , take up our cross so the world might know His matchless grace? Are we disturbed with the sin around us!
JESUS WAS DISTURBED AT THE SIGHT OF THE SUFFERING : Mark 1:40-42 (NIV
A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured.
The leper said if you are willingly you can make me clean. Jesus was moved by compassion! And he did something, same as in Matthew 20v 29-34, we have 2 blind men and Jesus was deeply moved, He was disturbed!
When see Somalia and the teeming multitudes does it move you? See the children blown up in Syria, does it move you?
Let me tell you it moves Jesus.
Children are being taken and sold as slaves from Sudan into Arab countries and Jesus is disturbed so he disturbed a lady in England who now goes and buys them back and returns them to their families WHY?
Because Jesus is DISTURBED and his compassion reaches down and causes someone to do something, someone said to me that's wrong, you shouldn't give money to these people, I asked what are you doing, ask those who have been set free, how they feel? We need to see as Jesus sees.
Suffering people all around us, mental suffering, physical suffering, spiritual suffering and Jesus is disturbed, does his heart touch your heart and cause you to say...
whatever it takes, whatever you say, wherever you want, I am disturbed with the things that disturb you O God never let me be comfortable while I see the suffering world without Jesus.
SOME OF YOU ARE SUFFERING TODAY, Jesus sees and he knows, the Bible says he is near to the broken hearted, close to the poor, he wants to help in your suffering.
We in Zim, for the past 10 years people suffering like nowhere else in the world, we see people beaten and moved by police and Government officials, some of our children living in dead of winter under plastic sheets, children can't pay school fees or buy uniforms, my wife Dorothy saw this and was disturbed and started Zimbabwe Orphan Care an organization that helps thousands of suffering children throughout Mashonaland area of Zim with food and shelter, help of all kinds, blankets, clothes, shoes and food. Burying children, a Wee girl of 14 years Martha, in Mbuya Nehanda died, called us no money to bury her, no transport for her body...
Dorothy was disturbed by the same things that disturb God and she is doing something about it.
Team USA, Global Passion, coats, sweaters, underwear etc Long Beach team wash feet... DISTURBED! With the things that disturb Jesus!
3. JESUS WAS MOVED AT THE SIGHT OF THE STARVING. When he saw the 5000 he was moved, it disturbed him, do you know that you are very very rich, let me give you a few figures, over 95% of the world don't have a bed to sleep in, only 4% of the world have a bank account, 5% of the world own a car, over 65% of the world live on a dollar a day, we are rich! over 80% of the people in Africa will go to bed hungry tonight,
there are very few of us ever hungry my friends, go to Target and Walmart see the trolley loads of food being bought, look at the waste, do you think it disturbs Jesus when most of the world is starving?
Don't get tied up with the world and spend money on treasures on earth, people trying to live like celebrities.... it will fade away. People spending money they don't have on buying meaningless things for people they don't like who don't want them anyway .
Dorothy and I try to live by the maxim of John Wesley, do all the good you can to all the people you can in all the places you can, while you can. What about the starving around you and me? The displaced from their homes, the people who have lost their homes either by force or by choice it's irrelevant, it disturbs our God when we don't go to the hungry like Jesus. What are you and me going to do? We need to be disturbed with what disturbs Jesus.
There are people in spiritual starvation also, there's a cry from within, and they don't know what they need, that disturbs our Lord, it disturbed him enough to leave Heaven and die on a cross for the spiritually starving multitudes, yet many Christians wouldn't cross the street to bring the food of the gospel to a hungry starving soul.
4. JESUS ALSO MOVED AT THE SIGHT OF THE SORROWING. There is a lot of sorrowing people in this world
Luke 7:11-17 (NIV) Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.” Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.” This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.
Jesus heart went out to the widow, Hallelujah we have a God who is not untouched by our sorrow and infirmities.
Jesus came to the city of Nain, in John 12 Jesus came to Martha and Mary, into their sorrow comes the heart of the Father, Jesus wept, when was the last time you wept, sorrowing children raped and abused, child traffiking in the millions, MEXICO BORDER, their sorrow is evident on their faces, who cares today? We live in a very impersonal and selfish world, but we must see as Jesus sees and act as Jesus acts today, must get involved with our world, Jesus did not love the world from arms length, Jesus Christ came into the world!
I think of wee man on the Shankill drunk, disturbed by God,
on plane last year 4 Vietnamese loud, deaf and disabled, no one on plane helped them, they didn't know what seat they were in and people blatantly avoided them, now they were loud and I said to Dorothy I bet they sit beside us and they did, but when the plane landed I was disturbed by God enough to get their bags and help them off and down the lift, they looked at me and said Thank you!
Not me but the Jesus who died and suffered for them moved in me. Praise God he was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, God had one son without sin and He took our sorrows so that we might become the Sons of God, today he sees your sorrowing, he is not far away, He loves you and cares for you so much, cast your cares on Him for he cares for you.
5. JESUS MOVED AND DISTURBED BY THE SIGHT OF STRANGER. In the story of the Good Samaritan, the man beaten and bruised was a stranger to everyone who passed by but eventually a man who naturally should have passed him by not only stopped to help but took this stranger and paid for food, care and lodging, why? Read Isaiah 58v6,7 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? God says all the people around us are our own flesh and blood! Refugees if you will, they are our flesh and blood! Jesus spoke on this passage in Matthew 25 and actually said in a summary "if you have no interest in the poor, hungry and starving, the stranger then you don't love me!" now check out, if we don't love the poor according to Proverbs 14v31 - 19v17 - 22v9 we have no part of God!
The Samaritan was a stranger but something disturbed him.
God, Jesus wants to disturb us, you and me have opportunities everyday to be moved at the sight of the stranger but many of us cannot hear the voice because we are not moved, we have become immune to the cry of the stranger, we become like the world around us, we see different colored faces, we hear the different accents around us and instead of letting the God of the strangers out we condemn and judge and walk by,
Strangers to God are all around us, we need to let God move us, to go to the stranger to grace, stranger to forgiveness, and stranger to Gods promise, Jesus says drastic things in Scripture, such as "you still lack one thing, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in Heaven. Then come, follow me" LUKE 18 v22. He always wants to disturb us!
In Old Testament when it talks of righteous and wicked do you know what it means! The righteous recognize all they have comes from God and they plunge it into their society, their wallet, their homes, all that they own is redistributed, they say it's not my own it belongs to God and God says look after the poor starving and naked and thirsty, who are our family in this society WOW. The wicked are people who say all that I have is mine! mine, mine, mine! And keep it for themselves.
Where we live in Africa Jesus is all around us, He is the poor, sick, naked and hungry, and as we get intimate with Him we find ourselves taking care of Him, and He will say on that great day, "come you who are blessed of the Father, take your inheritance, the Kingdom prepared for you before the foundation of the world...for I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me" MATT 25v34-36.
Our faith and religion are worthless if we do nothing about the physical needs of those who suffer from poverty. James 2:16 (NIV)
If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? We preach the Word, we do all we can, why even a cup of cold water for Jesus when He is thirsty will be rewarded.
Jesus said in JOHN 14v12 "those who have faith in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these because I am going to the Father"...now think about this, me? You? Ragtag disciples doing greater works than Jesus? I don't know about you but I haven't raised anyone from the dead recently or turned water into wine or helped a leper, but as we have been working and ministering with the poor and destitute we have discovered that the greater things are not just miracles, you see miracles were an expression not so much of Jesus' mighty power as of His love!
What had lasting significance were not the miracles themselves but Jesus love, Jesus raised his friend Lazarus from the dead but a few years later Lazarus died again, Jesus healed the sick but they eventually caught some other disease. He fed the multitudes but the next day they were hungry again.
BUT WE REMEMBER HIS LOVE! It wasn't that Jesus healed a leper but that He touched a leper because NO ONE touched lepers! And the incredible thing is that this love is now inside all of us, we are the body of Christ, the hands and feet of Jesus to the world. Oh my friends, let's get disturbed, by the sin, the suffering, the starving, the sorrowing and the stranger, disturbed with the things that disturb God.
