SHINE 40 Days of Love and Light- "Prayer" pt. 2

Pastor Mary Inman

Pastor Brent Way

Today Pastor Brent and I are going to talk about praying before witnessing.

Why pray? Because we need the prayer!

Most of us are shaking in our boots about verbally sharing Christ with our friends, neighbors, co-workers and family. We aren’t quite sure what to say and how to say it. Prayer is the precursor to successful witness. To change hiding out to shining out, we need to pray and be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Why Pray? Because God listens.  There is a great deal of supporting evidence for this.

2 Chron. 33:19   (King Manasseh humbled himself and prayed) God was moved by his entreaty, and listened to his plea.

Ezra leaves the Ahava Canal under King Ahaxerxes.

Ezra 8:23 So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.

Matthew 21:22 (Jesus) If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

I Peter 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous (equitable (in character or act); by implication, innocent, holy, just, meet, right living) and his ears are attentive to their prayer.

Why keep praying, when we don’t see results?

Let’s talk about persistent prayer. Sometimes we get disappointed and discouraged when our prayers take a long time to be answered, or they are answered differently than we planned. When Jesus was teaching on prayer, he told a story. We find it in Luke 11:8. It goes like this:

  • You have a surprise guest in your house, but nothing to feed him
  • You go at midnight and knock on the neighbor’s door
  • “I have a guest and nothing to feed him. Please give me 3 loaves of bread.”
  • “No, I can’t get up. My children and I are already in bed.”
  • More knocking
  • “Please, I have nothing to feed my guest.”
  • “No.”
  • Even though he won’t get up because of friendship, he will get up if you keep knocking (shameless persistence).

Jesus ends the story with this verse, in the aorist first tense:

Ask (and keep on asking) and it will be given you; seek (and keep on seeking) and you will find, knock (and keep on knocking) and the door will be opened to you. - Luke 11:9

Matthew 9:38 So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest ask him to send more workers into his fields.

Romans 10:1 Dear brothers and sisters, the longing of my heart and my prayer to God is for the people of Israel to be saved.

Isaiah 25:9 In that day the people will proclaim, “This is our God! We trust in him, and he saved us! This is the lord, in whom we trusted. Let us rejoice in the salvation he brings!”

Your prayers make a difference. So keep praying and patiently wait on the Lord of the Harvest to do the work!
